a brief stint as Freddie Benson

As a TV journalist, I’ve always loved being in front of the camera, but recently, I’ve discovered a wee new fave of mine, may be directing. And let me tell you, stepping into the director’s chair feels a bit like stepping into the world of iCarly.

I’ve been channeling my inner Freddie these past few days, shadowing the Senior Journos in the studio to see how everything operates.

As a gay gorlie, I was already halfway there in terms of wardrobe. But beyond the outfits, the real challenge has been learning the ropes of directing live broadcasts.

I won’t lie, I hasn’t been easy. Directing is high-pressure, fast-paced, and requires serious multitasking. My natural instinct is to rush, which isn’t ideal when precision is everything. But when I take a breath and focus, I actually love it. There’s something so satisfying about the countdowns, managing the cameras, and seeing everything come together in real time.

One of my favorite parts of this new role is getting to watch other people’s shows. Since I’m a Basingstoke lass through and through, it’s fun to be nosey about any Hampshire-based content. Seeing the Wote Street Willy on an Olay is jarring sometimes but its lovely to keep tabs on my little corner of the country.

Directing requires serious vigilance. It’s a level of pressure that I actually thrive under although I’m sure my nervous system would disagree. There’s an adrenaline rush that comes with making quick decisions, staying alert, and ensuring a seamless show. It’s a challenge, but one I’m absolutely loving.

So, while my time as Freddie Benson may be temporary, my love for directing is definitely here to stay.
